FAQs

What’s the meaning behind “Stilblūm”?

“Stilblūm” is a made-up word that evokes stillness, blooming, and the steady unfolding of time. It reflects the spirit I try to bring to both the making and sharing of each piece.

The name is rooted in my background in environmental science and my reverence for the greater-than-human world. I hold a deep respect for the California poppy: its vibrant resilience, its ability to blossom in the midst of drought, its way of returning season after season in surprising places. The poppy is a teacher in both fragility and rootedness, a symbol of beauty that emerges from deep ground.

The Stilblūm logo carries this symbolism: six horizontal lines represent layers of soil and time, inspired in part by the Tao Te Ching’s reverence for groundedness and flow. Cutting through those layers is the deep taproot of the poppy, reaching downward while the bloom bursts upward—reminding me that all growth begins in unseen places.

In both clay and care, I aim to honor those same principles: rooted presence, patient tending, and offerings shaped by the land I call home.

Why don’t you ship your ceramics?

Each piece I make is rooted in slowness, attention, and place. Just as a flower blooms where it’s planted, Stilblūm ceramics are meant to be encountered in person: held, chosen, and carried by hand.

I don’t ship my work because shipping turns these objects into products. It breaks the chain of connection between maker and recipient, and it subjects fragile, intentional pieces to the violence of a rushed system.

Instead, every vessel leaves the studio the way it arrived: with care, deliberation, and a human hand.

If you missed our in-person market sales, you’re welcome to choose between free local pickup in El Cerrito, CA (free) or white glove delivery within 30 minutes of El Cerrito (for a fee). If neither of these options meets your needs, I encourage you to use the Contact Form to reach out so we can discuss alternatives. This way, the work stays grounded in the continuous chain of connection between maker and recipient.

What’s “white glove delivery”?

It’s a hand-delivery service where your piece is delivered directly to you from my studio, within a 30-minute radius of El Cerrito. No boxes, no bubble wrap, just your piece arriving safely, with care.

Where do I pick up my order?

After you place an order with the local pickup option, I’ll reach out to arrange a time and share the El Cerrito address. Pickups are flexible and friendly.

Do you take commissions or custom orders?

Not currently. But I always love hearing what people are drawn to!

How do I find out about new pieces?

I announce shop updates through Instagram and my email list. If you’d like a gentle nudge when new work is available, signing up is the best way.

Are your ceramics dishwasher or microwave safe?

Most are, unless otherwise noted in the listing. That said, handmade pieces appreciate gentleness—handwashing is always welcome.

Can I send a piece as a gift?

Yes! Add a note at checkout with what you'd like the card to say, and I’ll include a handwritten message on plantable seed paper with your delivery or pickup.
